The story of Wharekauhau is one of legacy, vision, and deep respect for the land. Originally spanning 3,200 acres, the farm has long been a working property, home to around 300 head of cattle and 6,000 Romney and Texel-cross sheep. The Shaws, who began farming here in the late 1970s, were inspired by the wonder their guests felt when visiting. They opened their home to travellers seeking an authentic New Zealand farm experience, eventually expanding to create the lodge and cottages that welcome guests today.
In 2010, Bill and Carol Foley, while exploring New Zealand’s vineyards, returned to Wharekauhau and made it their own. Their vision is rooted in sharing the rugged beauty and genuine farm life of this unique place. Guests are invited to unwind, explore, and make lasting memories, whether through farm-to-table dining, connecting with the local community, or simply soaking in the spectacular surroundings. The Foley family’s ongoing involvement ensures that Wharekauhau remains a place of authenticity, history, and heartfelt hospitality.
The Wharekauhau rowlock is more than a symbol—it’s the spirit of the estate, representing integrity, quality, and genuine Kiwi resilience. This emblem has its roots in the farm’s storied past, stretching back to the 1800s when wool was transported by longboats across Palliser Bay. In 1876, a ship’s captain questioned the honesty of wool weights, suspecting farmers were adding rocks to the bales to inflate the price. To prove their integrity, the crew needed to uniquely brand their wool on the spot and register it before the ship left New Zealand waters.
Using a pot of paint and a rowlock from their longboat, they created a distinct mark that would become the farm’s trusted symbol. A race against time saw the brand registered in Wellington, securing their reputation. This tale, steeped in the pioneering spirit of the era, has been passed down through generations and continues to be proudly honoured today. The rowlock remains a lasting reminder of honesty, resourcefulness, and connection to the land.
The lodge beautifully captures the essence of a bygone era with its carefully curated antique furnishings, grand fireplaces, and warm, inviting spaces. Each room offers its own unique atmosphere, from bright open lounges to cosy nooks perfect for quiet reflection. The formal dining room leads naturally into a stunning country kitchen and sunlit conservatory, where guests can gather around a homely table and share stories with our chefs. Step outside through French doors into our enchanting private courtyard and discover the tranquillity of our manicured gardens.
Beneath the breathtaking landscape of Wharekauhau lies a thriving, historic farm. This coastal estate, one of New Zealand’s oldest Romney studs, has been a centre of sheep farming since the 1840s. Today, the 3,000-acre farm is alive with Romney sheep and Black Angus cattle, offering guests a rare chance to witness authentic pastoral life. Managed by the passionate Bradley Riggs, the farm pulses with seasonal rhythms—from the arrival of spring lambs to the hustle and tradition of mustering and shearing. Each day brings a new moment of magic to this storied land.
